Course Description: Students will learn one of four Three Dimensional Sculptural Book designs.

The first choice is a Kaleidoscope book that opens like a fan or a DNA Helix. We use four square sheets of paper that are folded three times each. Depending upon how the sheets are glued to one another, they will open and close in unique ways. The covers are wrapped with Japanese paper, and the pages are then glued inside.

A second book is a Flag book that has a series of pages that interweave. We’ll fold a long sheet of cardstock paper into an accordion. Twelve small pieces of matboard will be glued front to back along the folds. The covers will be wrapped in beautiful Japanese paper, the pages folded up and glued into the covers. When we open and close our books, the pages flip back and forth, making noise. It’s a very fun book.

The third book is a Tunnel book that opens like a diorama. The Tunnel books utilize two accordion-folded sheets for the sides. The back is a sheet of matboard; the front and four pages have varying sized openings to look through. The fronts, backs and pages are glued onto the accordion sides. The book opens so one can look into and through the pages. Pictures and/or words can be drawn or written onto the pages and covers.

The final option is a pop-up book that has parts that move with the action of turning the pages. We will have three pages that are folded to provide the mechanism to move cut outs forward and backwards. Presized matboard pieces will be wrapped with lovely Japanese paper of the students’ choosing. The pop up pages are then glued into the covers.
